Enterprise resource planning (ERP) can be described as powerful software that helps organizations to effectively manage and automate their existing business. It is also a complete software solution package for running large organizations and meeting their requirements with ease and effectiveness.

The present day market scenario has opened up several challenges for professionals who are trained in ERP. The ERP career map is not limited to the field of Information Technology (IT) alone. It extends to diverse fields such as engineering, pharmaceutical, automobile industries, and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO).

ERP system is considered to be the backbone of every organization. It is primarily concerned with managing data pertaining to the financial transactions of the organization. The ERP Manager is responsible for ensuring that all the work done by the ERP team is in conformity with the predefined objectives of the organization. The objectives of ERP must be defined in such as manner that the organizational objectives are attainable.

An ERP manager is responsible for formulating plans, policies and procedures to ensure business goals. He is expected to maintain a sense of harmony and coordination between the organization, ERP team, users of ERP and customers. He is also expected to liaison with vendors and other parties to achieve customer satisfaction.

Other tasks include testing of ERP components in accordance with prevailing rules and regulations of local and government bodies. The ERP Managers role in the management hierarchy is as important as that of any other manager.

A good ERP manager has skills such as leadership qualities, analytical capabilities, team management strategies and convincing abilities apart from excellent communication skills. A thorough knowledge of ERP systems and procedures is essential to this role.

A manager has to find solutions to many ERP challenges, such as: * How can security costs be lowered? * Are the users of ERP being given unauthorized rights inadvertently? * How can compliance costs be lowered? * How should roles based on the organizational hierarchy be managed? * Is the ERP system susceptible to mistakes? If yes, what should the precautionary steps be? * Does the ERP system require updating? * Is the ERP system effective and efficient to achieve organizational business goals?

The role of the ERP manager is of paramount importance as it had emerged as part of organizational dynamism. Interestingly, a decade ago, the same role was viewed as a complete waste of time. Progress ushers in renewed awareness. That is why ERP is now considered to be an integral part of the organizational needs and objectives.

As it is almost imperative for all modern-day organizations to have an effective and efficient ERP system, the role of a ERP manager is vital. One can be sure of wondrous job prospects ahead in this field.
