Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is a powerful computer application that is used in modern-day organizations. This software helps to efficiently and effectively manage, control and automate business activities. It can also be summarized as a total software solution package for augmenting performance in large organizations and meeting their requirements with ease and effectiveness.

The role of an ERP consultant is to ensure initial implementation of the ERP system as a whole. He should have the capability to ensure that the developed system is able to deliver the purpose of its development thereafter. He may also be assigned the task of training the employees of the organization about the benefits of the system.

The ERP consultant must have the required educational qualifications that are prescribed from various educational bodies from time-to-time. A prior experience in fields such as information technology, computer programming, sales, marketing, logistics, human resources and supply chain management would be an added advantage. Any professional who is desirous of making a career in the field of ERP consulting must develop his communication and presentation skills. Internship with an ERP consultancy or any organization that has a good ERP system would also be beneficial in this regard.

Tasks include creation of an effective work-flow procedure, imparting additional product training, providing expertise towards solving business problems, and assisting in the generation of reports. He is also the part of the consulting team that devises effective planning, coordination, control and implementation of the developed ERP system.

The ERP consultant is expected to provide detailed study reports on the existing processes and align it with corresponding ERP system processes. Thus, the ERP consultant is the chieftain who deals with the selection and implementation of ERP system and business re-engineering for the organization.

The various tasks that are performed by the ERP consultant can be classified as follows: * Development and implementation of ERP system. * ERP package selection. * Analyzing business requirements. * Preparation of the functional specifications for ERP program development * Systems analysis and documentation. * Application configuration and installing ERP throughout the organization. * Assessing the competence level of the users of the ERP system. * Performing Gap analysis and related studies. * Imparting training to employees of the organization. * Conversion and configuration. * Identifying the requirements of the users of the ERP system. * Product design and operations review.

The role of an ERP consultant is vital to the business needs of an organization. Thus, one can rightly conclude that the ERP consultant is an integral part of the organization's hierarchy.
